Scaling and Root Planing Instructions
Congratulations! You have taken the first step in controlling your gum disease. You have entered a partnership between yourself and my staff to dramatically improve your health. The goal of your therapy today was to remove the infected root surfaces of your teeth and the bacterial deposits under your gum line. At this point, you may feel sensitivity and soreness of the gum tissues and teeth. Many of our patients have had the same experience. They found that it maybe necessary to take a mild pain reliever such as aspirin, Tylenol, or Ibuprofen. Also, comfort can be increased by placing a warm towel on the jaw muscles for 20 minutes. I would recommend rinsing twice a day with warm salt water for 3 days to promote healing of the tissues.
However, the most important factor in achieving the best results of your therapy is what you do on a daily basis. The first 30 days is crucial in the healing process. Bacteria will try immediately to re-invade the root surface. Therefore, carefully follow our recommendations of thorough brushing, flossing, and using other aids we have prescribed for you. Without your participation your results will be compromised. I cannot stress this point enough. Improvement of your gum health will enhance the appearance of your smile, prevent tooth loss, remove unpleasant taste, and reduce discomfort. Gum disease has also been associated with higher risks of heart disease, mothers with low birth weight babies, and compromises the health of diabetics. We look forward to your continued care and if you have any questions please contact me or my staff at (308) 234-3668. We are here to help you. Your health matters to us.
